Making the rounds in the social media networks and the Philippine anime scene is the auction of a Re:Zero tarpaulin featuring Rem and Ram, and how someone in the audience had the crazy temerity to buy it for… yep, $201. Or roughly PHP 9,500!

Yes. 9,500. Nine thousand and five hundred Philippine pesos.

That amount is already a minimum wager’s month worth of pay, or a regular worker’s 15th-day pay.

Does the size justify it all? Some people don't think so.

The size of the tarpaulin appears to be of significant size. But some people don’t think the bid reaching such an amount was even justified, or worth the money.

The auction happened in the last day of Otaku Expo’s annual anime-themed convention, held at SM Megamall Megatrade Hall 1, August 6-7.

This was not the first time such an auction raised eyebrows, as the organizers previously auctioned a tarpaulin featuring Hestia from the anime “Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka.” (more commonly referred to as ‘danmachi’) The price? PHP 5000.

The infamous tarp that started it all.

If only someone could tell the high roller that such a tarp poster could be done easily for less the amount. The tarpaulin wasn’t even printed nor signed by someone of official significance. (like, creators or publishers of re:zero maybe?)

Watch and cringe as a paycheck’s worth of money gets squandered for bragging rights, and maybe ‘waifu’ bragging. Video courtesy of KadiriSubs.
