The Philippines and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) have vowed stronger bilateral defense relations.
ROK Army Chief of Staff Gen. Kim Yo-Hwan visited the country last May 14 and met with Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin.
Gazmin said he was “thankful for the ROK’s interest in the modernization of the Philippines.”
The country recently purchased 12 FA-50 Lead-in Fighter-trainers worth P18.9 billion from South Korea.
The transaction is on top of the trucks and ambulances the country is also acquiring from South Korea.
Gazmin also thanked Kim for the ROK Army’s help in the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda.
“The people of Tacloban and nearby towns only had good things to say about the Araw Unit. We truly thank you,” Gazmin said.
Kim said that the deployment of the Araw Unit is one way of showing South Korea’s gratitude for the help the Philippines gave during the Korean War.
